Bishop: I named a committee right away. There are seven bishops that I can appoint as members of the committee. So I asked Cardinal (Justin) Rigali of Philadelphia, whom I had defeated in the election to be a member of the committee and he graciously accepted. I named Bishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk of Cincinnati; Bishop Edward Braxton, bishop of Lake Charles, La.; Bishop Blase Cupich, bishop of Rapid City, S.D.; Bishop Ricardo Ramirez of Las Cruces, N.M.; and Bishop Emil Wcela, the auxiliary bishop of Rockville Centre, N.Y., as members of the committee. Each of these bishops brings a unique talent. For example, Archbishop Pilarczyk is a Latin scholar. Bishop Ramirez will represent the Hispanic community. Bishop Wcela studied with me at the Biblicum (the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome) and has a biblical degree. Each bishop brings a special gift, I think, to the work of the committee.

Then, in addition to those members, I named four consultants: Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago; Cardinal (Roger) Mahoney, archbishop of Los Angeles, Bishop Thomas Curry, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles and Bishop Edward Grosz of Buffalo.

Bishop Ramirez, I appointed as the new chairman of the Hispanic subcommittee and Bishop Grosz was named chairman of the liturgy and music subcommittee. And then I named some theologians as well as advisors to the committee.

Steve Girone:
So what do you think this all means?
Time will tell: this gernymandering has shown that the “progressives” still have some clout and exercised it. With the new directives coming out of Rome, Trautman may be able to stall implementation, but it’s going to be harder. Remember this is the bishop who after ICEL was “thrown out” continued to want to make certain we had “copyrights” on it - like who’d want the stuff?

OTOH this may be a face saving action which saves “face” for a few whose past performance in the field of liturgy turned out to be somewhat of an embarassment to them and by taking a position they look like they are being successful at something.

It’s going to be interesting I can tell you that.

PASCENDI:
That’s Bishop Troutperson or Mr. Inclusive language to us
I can tell you - when I read the accounts of how he was nominated from the floor and noodged the two candidates right out and got the votes, I :banghead:

I console myself with the thought of the old Irish warning: “Be careful of what you pray for, God may just give it to you” - we shall see how the good bishop fares in this assignment.

Who was it that said,

"A camel is a horse designed by a committee" ?

**Wonder if he said anything about a Mass designed **
by a committee ?
