Bishops take actions against nuns, CHA over stand on health reform

From the Georgia Bulletin, the following CNS story:

WASHINGTON (CNS) – At least two U.S. bishops have taken actions to indicate their disapproval of the support some women’s religious communities and the Catholic Health Association gave to the final version of health care reform legislation. Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt of Greensburg, Pa., has directed diocesan offices, parishes and the diocesan newspaper not to promote the “vocation awareness program of any religious community” that was a signatory to a letter urging members of the House of Representatives to pass the health reform bill. In Providence, R.I., Bishop Thomas J. Tobin asked the Catholic Health Association to remove the diocesan-sponsored St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island from its membership rolls, saying that CHA leadership had “misled the public and caused serious scandal” by supporting health reform legislation that the bishops opposed. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops was against the measure because its provisions on abortion funding and conscience protections were morally unacceptable. When the bill passed, the bishops reiterated their decades-long support for providing access to health care for all but expressed regret that health care reform came with the possibility of expanded abortion funding and urged vigilance that an executive order by President Barack Obama would, as promised, ensure no federal funds will be spent on abortion. Some Catholic groups reacted with enthusiasm to the passage of health reform and Obama’s executive order, and others said the order would have no effect on abortion funding.​

As far as theology and culture goes, I am as ‘right-wing’ as the next guy… but I am not so sure I see why, as Catholics, we should vocally oppose health care… I think we should be open to it in, in theory, shouldn’t we? Even if it means agreeing with Barack-PartialBirthAbortionBan-Obama on some things.

Will someone clarify why the good bishops took this course?
 
We oppose it because it contains birth control funding with tax payers dollars. Stupak sold out for several hundered of thousands of dollars for airport improvements in his state. The Executive Order signed by President Obama- upon which Stupak negotiated to change his vote and forget about the absolute removal of abortion funding from health care - removing abortion funding from the bill, does not carry the weight of congress and can be removed by the Democratic Congress/Senate at their desire. It is a paper tiger and Stupak knew it. He sold his vote for several hundred of thousands of dollars of airport improvements in his state, which has already been funded. One thing you have to say for President Obama, he keeps his promises when it comes to vote buying.

The Catholic church does not stand against Health Care improvements, it stands against abortion, and because Stupak prevented the bill from being passed in the Senate because it contained abortion funding with tax payer dollars, and thus forcing the Democrates to pass “the only bill” they had, which was approved in the Congress, and which contained abortion funding by public taxes.

That is why we are against it, it is the biggest abortion funding program in the US History. You have got to stay up with the news!!!

And that is why Stupak has “decided” not to run for re-election.

No. He was saying that even though Obama does not mind the mass-murder of children, on those things where he may be correct we should agree with him. In other words, we should not hate everything Obama does just because it is Obama.

Unfortunately, Obama does nothing correctly. 😛

Supposedly, feeding aborted babies to homeless people would be appealing and ‘charitable’ to some.
