Can a Bishop be married? If so what schooling and what does it involveand would be required.

No. Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, and some very few Latin Catholic priests, may be married before ordination; but only unmarried priests are chosen as bishops.

in the latin rite

I may be incorrect but I believe bishop is the one priestly order that cannot be married even in eastern rites of the Church. But our Eastern brothers will have to clarify on this for us.

Bishops cannot be married in Catholic Church (no matter the Rite).

Bishops are selected from the best Priests in the Diocesses.

The only bishop that would be married is an Old Catholic bishop, or a Polish National Catholic bishop, as they possess valid orders.

No schooling is required. The degree that is required to become a bishop is not major, and many priests possess it.

That **was **true of the Old Catholics but it changed when they began to have bishopesses. That broke the continuity of Apostolic Succession. Any (male) “ordained” through a line of succession that includes bishopess was not ordained at all.

As the first Pope was married, what I would like to know when and how did the requirement for celibate bishops arise.

I understand that the ancient Eastern practice was to draw bishops from the ranks of monks, which is why bishops were celibate. So, what happened before there were monks? Were bishops married?

A previously married priest who is widowed can become an Orthodox bishop.
