Bit of a quandary -- should I replace my bible study software?

I am a long-time user (20 years or so) of the PC Study Bible software (here’s the link so those who are interested can see for themselves what the capabilities and contents are – nehemiahbiblesoftware.com/biblesoft-pc-study-bible.html?gclid=CLL1m-uR0bECFYOc7QodllMAOA ). The last version that I bought was in 2002, and it worked well on the computers I’ve had since then, up to and including my Windows XP netbook and the Vista laptop. However, the laptop died, and I now have a Windows 7 laptop, and the old software doesn’t work on it.

One complicating factor in my decision is the expense of the software. It’s all on a half-off sale right now, but even so, the version I’m looking at is $200. The other complicating factor is the fact that as a Catholic I’m not doing the kind of deep, language-oriented study that I was doing as a Protestant, when I was regularly teaching and sometimes preaching. As a Catholic layman I don’t have the outlets that I had as a Protestant, and hard study with no way to talk about what you’ve learned leads to frustration. If I’m going to use the software only rarely, what’s the point of spending that kind of money?

Other forum denizens, what are your thoughts?
 
I listen to a free podcast of Orthodox priest Fr. Lawrence Farley on Ancient Faith Radio (ancientfaith.com) called Coffee Cup Commentaries. If you want good Bible study, try listening to that instead. He explains things simply and he would do the connection with other verses from old and new Testament for you, and even explain the original Greek terminologies from the passage he is discussing on each podcast.
 
My advice would be to download and install VirtualBox (virtualbox.org/) for free, set up a virtual machine and install XP on it, and use your Bible study software from there.

Most of the time I don’t have access to the internet. Also, how would this help when I want to look up a specific verse of a specific chapter of a specific book? Or when I’m working in the Old Testament (Fr. Farley deals only with the New Testament)?

It’s easy, the program has a pretty good guide that tells you what to do as you go along. If you want to give it a shot, send me a PM and I’ll be glad to help you out. All you need, outside of the Virtual Box software, is a Windows XP install disc. 🙂
