What makes people do this? I saw this on TV and I wondered what causes this? Has anyone ever heard?

My ex used to cut… he said it was to feel… meaning that he was emotionally detached. We have a boy in my son’s HS that does it all the time too… He has been in and out of hospitals.

Yes, cutting and self-mutilation are a big deal. Morally, it violates respect due to the health of persons (including oneself). Medically, it is very dangerous because of the micriobiological soup that’s in the mouth and all around us; a person could get very seriously infected, and if it’s MRSA…maybe dead.

Mental illness could mitigate the moral culpability of the sin, but then that makes it obvious that this is a mental health issue and self-mutilators need professional help. Anti-depressants and/or anti-anxiety meds plus counseling would be a very effective treatment.

Spiritual help is also helpful but please realize that priests aren’t psychiatrists. Jesus is the Healer but he delegates most of the work to health care professionals. 😃

No, but I have permanent marks on my hands from biting myself.

I have not talked to my doctor about it.
Please see a mental health professional asap. I started Self-injuring as a child. I began with biting, and I now have hundreds of scars from cutting. Not only do I have scars, but it really has messed up my head. I don’t know how to function without pain. Please get help now.
