Just out of curiosity, what are the proper occasions when a priest or deacon would wear a black cope? The only times I can think of would be during a burial and blessing of graves. Is that correct? Thanks I’m advance.

Funeral rites outside of Mass and presiding at the public recitation of the Office for the Dead are also possibilities. There’s also the rarer possibilty of seeing it in a Pontifical Mass in the extraordinary form as worn by the assistant priest, and then it would of course have to be a Requiem Mass being celebrated.

The priest wore his black cope to the cemetery for the burial of one of my dear friends. Our parish did not have black vestments for the funeral, so he wore purple if I remember correctly. The black cope did add solemnity to the burial, and helped to keep the priest warm as it was a cold day.
