You make some broad generalizations which suggest you have not thoroughly researched the subject. The past certainly had many injustices. But it is not true that history was nothing but constant and extreme injustice in the south and nothing but perfect justice in the north.
Most blacks were slaves but not all Blacks. In fact some Blacks were masters of other Black slaves. Blacks were often and institutionally poorly treated throughout the US. Many non-slave states in the midwest and north had racial laws.Pre-civil war, blacks in the south were slaves, and were treated as such:
Simply untrue. I’m sure some owners did not want their slaves to become Christian. This would be owners who were not themselves Christians. There were plenty of Christian owners who did want their slaves to be Christians. There were slave churches and Blacks at times did attend non-slave churches. Stonewall Jackson famously led a Sunday School for free and enslaved Blacks. By the way for most of history most Christians did not oppose slavery because the church did not oppose slavery. The conclusion that the equality Christ mentions excludes slavery was not the consensus throughout most of Christian history in no small part because Paul tells slaves to obey their masters.
- Owners did not want their slaves to become Christians because they feared that slaves might interpret the teachings of Jesus Christ to favour equality. Hence, they did not teach them to read nor did not allow them to assemble (no organized bible study)
Segregated churches existed in the north as well. Blacks were often not welcomed in northern churches. There were Black preachers in the South. It is true that some states passed laws after the Turner rebellion requiring a White preacher be present. But one has to consider the whole history not just some of the years.
- The few southern churches that did allow them to attend church had them segregated. Slaves certainly did not sit in the pews with their white owners and white neighbors. They also were not allowed to have black preachers, only white.
This is simply not true. There is a pre war Black church in my town. There are many throughout the South.Only in the North were there black churches pre civil war.
