Let’s get one thing out there- I don’t boast of this, but from time to time and especially while doing certain things, I have an anger and cussing problem. Quite a very serious and even irrational one at times, to the point where one could hardly tell I was a Christian.
I know good and well that cursing as such is sinful, as St. James tells us in his letter. But I’m quite a bit confused about the exact relationship between “coarse language” and mortal sins against the Second Commandment. At what point does cursing become a deadly sin for which one should seek Confession as soon as possible? When is cussing, especially if one arguably has a problem with it as a habitual sin, become blasphemy against God? I am particularly ashamed of the occasions when I curse God’s name specifically as a cuss word rather than “just” letting out a stream of those four letter words, but is that necessarily a mortal sin when it comes out in occasional anger, of if the situation does not seem to be “serious?”
I am not trying to lessen the gravity of any sin here. What I am really trying to get at is what I should do to combat these sins, and, more to the point of why I made this thread, whether or not or how often I should be seeking Reconciliation immediately. I am trying to go to Mass every single day and obviously want to communicate at every available opportunity, but I don’t want to commit sacrilege if it turns out that I should have gone to Confession because of the blasphemy I shouted in frustration of the video game I was playing the night before.
What are your thoughts on this? Is anyone else struggling with a bad mouth?
