Let’s get one thing out there- I don’t boast of this, but from time to time and especially while doing certain things, I have an anger and cussing problem. Quite a very serious and even irrational one at times, to the point where one could hardly tell I was a Christian. 😦

I know good and well that cursing as such is sinful, as St. James tells us in his letter. But I’m quite a bit confused about the exact relationship between “coarse language” and mortal sins against the Second Commandment. At what point does cursing become a deadly sin for which one should seek Confession as soon as possible? When is cussing, especially if one arguably has a problem with it as a habitual sin, become blasphemy against God? I am particularly ashamed of the occasions when I curse God’s name specifically as a cuss word rather than “just” letting out a stream of those four letter words, but is that necessarily a mortal sin when it comes out in occasional anger, of if the situation does not seem to be “serious?”

I am not trying to lessen the gravity of any sin here. What I am really trying to get at is what I should do to combat these sins, and, more to the point of why I made this thread, whether or not or how often I should be seeking Reconciliation immediately. I am trying to go to Mass every single day and obviously want to communicate at every available opportunity, but I don’t want to commit sacrilege if it turns out that I should have gone to Confession because of the blasphemy I shouted in frustration of the video game I was playing the night before.

What are your thoughts on this? Is anyone else struggling with a bad mouth?

you now what can help to stopping cussing, were a rubber band and every time you catch yourself cussing flick yourself with it

search under the advanced search for “profanity” and “bookcat” I have addressed this area here in the past.

i do the same thing! i’m so ashamed 😦 i don’t get mad too often but i say those things under my breath. my husband is really bad but having our little kids around stops him about 80% of the time. my husband and i stop each other with, “don’t say it!” or “ok ok that’s enough!” it has gotten better with this method. i found that not saying any curse words is easier than choosing what words to use in that moment.
i have an adult confession handbook and it says to go to confession; if you have used God’s name irreverently, either in anger or in jest? did you curse another, that is deliberately with evil to him or ask God to bring misfortune upon him? have you deliberately called upon God to witness the truth of what you knew was a lie?
hope that helps

Thanks for the help, I shall go to confession after or before Mass tomorrow, just to be safe, or rather to try and break this accursed habit by way of frequenting the sacraments. But I’ve already been to confession this week! I must really need the grace. :o

I’m quite sure that would cause more cussing for me, which would result in further rubber band snapping and then another fit of cussing, which would lead to…well, you get the point.

apologize prayerfully to Jesus or God every time you use His name as a curse or swearing. do the same for people around you (in your head). I found that to be enormously helpful in curbing my appetite for swearing. i also used to imagine that a three year old was standing near me at all times, ready to say whatever I said.

I really understand what you are going through as I swear too. Profanity demonstrates a lack of respect for those around you and for those you curse. When you use God’s name in profanity, it is showing irreverence to Him. What you are doing is proscribed and needs to be addressed seriously. Now that you understand the gravity of situation, you’ll probably be more mindful of it. When you go to reconciliation, make sure you address this problem as it has become a habit, just like it had for me.

Choose a different word or two and use it as your stress release word. Try a Homer Simpsion “D’oh” or try “Argh!” when you need to let loose.

And what about writing a book with 80+ cuss words in it, illustrating the impatience of a character?
