I’ve been struggling with them constantly for the past 2 weeks or so, they just won’t stop. I know they’re not sinful if one doesn’t will them, but most of the time I can’t tell if I am or not. They certainly don’t seem to come from “outside” of me, as if they’re just wandering in, and sometimes they do feel almost deliberate. Either way, I absolutely hate them, and love God with all my heart. If this is the case, can they still be considered sinful?

Also, would it be wrong to wish for them to continue, should God desire for that to be the case? Reading the lives of Padre Pio and St. Faustina, two of my favorite saints, they had to deal with this to a very severe extent, and there are times when I almost wish for the thoughts to continue so I can imitate them and be pleasing to God.

I want God’s will to be done, and I don’t mind struggling with the thoughts if he intends for the struggle to happen. I worry about offending him, and just can’t understand if I am or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Wanting God’s will to be done is the most important thing. It’s dangerous to ask for temptations like this to continue, because you could easily fall into sin. If God wishes to permit them, they will continue; if not, they will stop. Let God decide.

For now, imagine a conveyor belt in your mind and just put the bad thoughts on it and let them pass through without paying them much attention. Let them keep moving, and they’ll soon be gone. Meanwhile, turn your attention to something interesting and good. Do an act of service for someone. Read something fascinating about a whole other subject. Don’t try to fight - distract yourself instead.

They are intrusive thoughts. If you don’t want them and they still come, they are not considered sinful.

I think both baltobetsy and Kathrin have given you good advice.
I suffer the same - in particular, the thoughts I’m unsure about (temptation or deliberately allowed?). Those who are plagued by these thoughts (and a plague they are), understand the toll they take on us.

But I DON’T think it’s right to ask God to let them continue. It sounds as though your intention is to imitate the saints. In His Divine Wisdom, God knows what crosses to give us. Simply ask Him for His Help in carrying those crosses but please don’t ask for temptations. Ever hear the saying, “be careful what you wish for?” Just say to God, “Not my will, but Thine be done.”
I believe God, our Heavenly Father, would be pleased to hear that. (I can’t help but wonder how seldom God must hear that prayer instead of asking Him for something !)
