Are we obligated to avoid TV shows where we know blasphemous language is included? So many shows take the Lord’s Name in vain so casually.

No, you are not obligated to avoid such shows. If you’re a well formed adult, what you watch/read is a matter of prudential judgment (outside of stuff like pornography, etc)

Thank you for the thought. It is a conflict obviously.

I agree with you. It IS sad that almost all of TV blasphemes the Lord’s Name. What would happen if TV started blaspheming prophets of other religions? I think we all know the answer.

I thinks it’s weird that people have stopped saying oh my G-d and instead say oh my gosh, not out of respect for God but because they don’t want to offend people who don’t believe! The corruptor at work again.

Blasphemy is FAR worse than any other sin commonly shown or simulated on TV. It doesn’t seem like it, but it is. I would avoid it.

I wouldn’t say obligated, but if it is an issue for you personally then you would do well to avoid them. They don’t bother me much since I hear language like that everyday in the workplace. There’s no way to keep my distance from it. As long as one does not begin to imitate the language heard and is confident in their personal spiritual strength then such programs become only an annoyance.

The unfortunate truth is that profanity is rampant, and not just on TV. Its hard to go out or even on the internet without seeing some sort of misuse of God’s name. In the past, I was guilty a few times, although a few times were unthinkingly.

But it is true its on many things on TV, and not just the R-rated material, but also sometimes in family films and in vintage films even from before the mid-60s in addition to otherwise harmless TV shows.

Something I do though is that (if I’m not already praying something such as a rosary while somebody else watches TV) whenever I hear His name mentioned in an irreverent manner in real life or on TV, I say a quick Glory Be.

Look at it as an opportunity to pray for the writer and the actor who had to say it…

The world always can use some extra prayers!

If it just seems gratuitus, then find something else to watch!

I must confess that I am heartily sick of our national broadcaster in Australia. It religiously announces before something is screened that:

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following presentation shows images of people who are deceased” or similar words to that effect.

This is in response to the traditional/religious sensibilities of that group to seeing images of the dead.

While this is a thoughtful and respectful thing to do, they ignore the fact that the program will probably contain unrestrained blasphemy, and in many cases, deliberate and sustained attacks on the Church and Christianity. No one cares whether a Christian would be offended.

The hypocrisy of our tax payer funded broadcaster is breath taking.

Even when I hear “Oh my G—“ - on tv - it used to not bother me too much but now it does.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Most people who use the Lord’s Name in vain do not realize what they are saying. Sad.
