I feel really stupid. Today I committed a sin twice that I’ve been really good about in the past. For the first time in months, I’ve taken the lord’s name in vain by saying “Dear Lord” two separate times today.

I feel guilty first of all, since I know that’s bad. 😦 But I feel super dumb because I just confessed to doing this on Saturday (for making a bad joke about priests) and I felt really bad about that one too.

I can’t belive I slipped up on this today. I’d been doing so well for many months up until today. :nope:

This is blasphemy, right?
 
Are you sure that is blasphemy? I guess I never looked at that phrase as being blasphemy.
 
You may have taken His name in vain, but blasphemy takes a little more concious effort.

CCC 2148 **Blasphemy **is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one’s speech; in misusing God’s name. St. James condemns those “who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called.” The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ’s Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God’s name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God’s name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion.

Blasphemy is contrary to the respect due God and his holy name. It is in itself a grave sin.

It is not blasphemy. You weren’t intending to be irreverent. It wasn’t a mortal sin- if it was a sin at all. “Lord” is a title for God- it isn’t His name. Using the title of God irreverently is a venial sin at worst.
