I went on a service retreat about a month ago where we ran a camp for very poor migrant kids. One night during prayer she mentioned that the original text of the Beatitudes said, “Blessed be the poor” not “Blessed be the poor in spirit in spirit.” She told us in spirit was later added to the text.

Is this true? A priest was with us when she said this and he didn’t correct her about it.

Any help would be appreciated.

It is not all correct or incorrect. “Blessed are the poor” is sermon on the plain while “Blessed are the poor in spirit” is sermon on the mound

Exactly, but it really doesn’t matter. The biblical concepts of “poor” and “poor in spirit” both begin with the idea of having only God to lean on and depend on. “She” was was likely being a bit politically correct.

Correct. Net worth isn’t really the issue. Detachment from the “stuff” of the world is.

Many poor people are so wound up in trying to catch up materially, they are actually more attached to things of this world than others who have all their needs met.
