May they be fruitful for the Church and for each of you . . :signofcross:

(I just went to Confession to begin this little “season” . . . )

That is a delightful remembrance. I think they have sort of gone out of vogue in the church, but such beautiful traditions go along with them

I thought they began on the 24th this year, because of the revisions to the calender in 1960?

“Autumn”? I need to be in shorts here. 😛

You know the Sept ember days were used to predict the weather for the next 3 months.?.Wed will predict Oct…Fri will predict Nov, and Sat will predict Dec

Wow! That would be a prediction I could live with!!

Nope. They are still the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday following September 14 (Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross).

Nope. They are still the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday following September 14 (Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross).
But according to wikipedia:
The ember days, still observed by Traditional Roman Catholics who use pre-1969 liturgical calendars, began on the Wednesday immediately following those days. This meant, for instance, that if September 14 were a Tuesday, the ember days would occur on September 15, 17, and 18. As a result the ember days in September could fall after either the second or third Sunday in September. This, however, was always the liturgical Third Week of September, since the First Sunday of September was the Sunday closest to September 1st (August 29 to September 4). As a simplification of the liturgical calendar, Pope John XXIII modified this so that the Third Sunday was the third Sunday actually within the calendar month. Thus if September 14 were a Sunday, September 24, 26 and 27 would be ember days, the latest dates possible; with September 14 as a Saturday, however, the ember days would occur on September 18, 20 and 21 - the earliest possible dates.

Do we have any experts out there who can tell us the current Ember Days?

Obviously, Wikipedia has them always following the third Sunday of September as Rawb states:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ember_days

But New Advent’s Catholic Encyclopedia still shows them at following the Exaltation of the Cross

newadvent.org/cathen/05399b.htm

as does the Episcopalian site

emberdays.blogspot.com/

and About.com seems to state it is all pretty much up to local bishops, which may explain the confusion
Optional Today:
With the revision of the liturgical calendar in 1969, the Vatican left the celebration of Ember Days up to the discretion of each national conference of bishops. They’re commonly celebrated in Europe, particularly in rural areas.
In the United States, the bishops’ conference has decided not to celebrate them, but individual Catholics can and many traditional Catholics still do, because it’s a nice way to focus our minds on the changing of the liturgical seasons and the seasons of the year. The Ember Days that fall during Lent and Advent are especially useful to remind children of the reasons for those seasons.
I yield the thread to those who know more than I – with an old missal and the Internet to confuse me. 😉

They are the same days they always were but some Bishops do not use them now…It has become a discretionary practice since Vatican II…they are every quater of the year I think, and they follow the seasons

The other Ember Days occur the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the 3rd Sunday of Advent, the 1st Sunday of Lent, and Pentecost.
It is the September ones that can be confusing as to which actual Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. According to the Ordo published by the FSSP, the ember days this month fall on the 24th, 26th, and 27th. I just checked a website which follows and older calendar, and they have the ember days this week since they are the W, F, and S which immediately follow September 14th.

Yes, the Ember days are different this year depending which calendars one follows.

The way it works is that the Ember days are actually determined by the “Liturgical Week” of the breviary (i.e. first week of September, second week of September, etc.). The Ember days come under the readings for the Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Third Week of September. The Liturgical Week does not always coincide exactly with the calendar week.

The explanation of Wikipedia is correct ( 😉 ) - John XXIII altered the reckoning of the liturgical weeks of September in the breviary, and consequently there is a shift for the time Ember days. Prior to John XXIII, the Third Week always fell after the Holy Cross so that was commonly used as a determinant.

(NewAdvent will, of course not have this information since it was written in 1910)
