Celebrated on March 19th

Saint Joseph pray for us

Foster father of Jesus and husband of Our Lady , patron saint of families, homes, hospices, manual workers, especially carpenters, and those who desire a happy death.

All that is known of St Joseph for certain is in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. He came from the house of David but his trade as a carpenter shows that he was not rich. He was betrothed to Mary and worried when he learnt that she was pregnant, until an angel came to him in a dream.

After the birth of Jesus, Joseph was warned in other dreams firstly to flee with his family to Egypt and then when Herod died, to return to Israel. But he feared Herod’s successor and went on to Galilee, where the Holy Family set up home in Nazareth.

The episode of the 12 year-old Jesus being lost on the way back from the Passover at Jerusalem, again shows Joseph as a faithful father and husband.

While traditionally St Joseph is depicted as an old man, historians think he was probably younger. It is not know when he died, but it was before the crucifixion. The few biblical details give an impression of a just, compassionate, dignified and brave man, prompt in action but self-effacing.

A Greek document called the History of Joseph the Carpenter helped to create the cult to him from the fifth century onwards.

Early Irish writers had a great devotion to St Joseph.

Across mediaeval Europe he became immensely popular. St Theresa of Avila dedicated the mother house of her reformed Carmelite convents to the saint and frequently recommended devotion to him in her writings. St Ignatius Loyola also promoted his cult.

Pope Pius XII encouraged the second celebration of St Joseph, as St Joseph the Worker on 1 May. Pope John XXIII added his name to the Canon of the Mass in 1962.

The symbol of St Joseph is a white lily, signifying purity.

O St. Joseph, Foster father of Jesus Christ and true spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us, and for all those suffering and dying in the world this day and night.
St. Joseph, pray for us.

Big fan of St. Joseph here. I was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph and we kept this day as a feast day despite coming in the middle of Lent.

When I have a patient on hospice, before I walk into their room, I pray for St Joseph’s intercession.

I always feel he is the most lucky person who lived on earth.Saved and protected our mother Mary and Jesus from danger, worked for feeding Mary and Jesus and best of all, died in the presence of both of them!

I was also taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph and my high school was named after him. They used to give us March 17th off instead of March 19th though, because St. Patrick’s Day was huge in my area and many of the students would be kept home by their parents anyway in order to participate in family celebrations. So they would close the school on March 17 and say it was for St. Joseph’s Day. Now I look back on it, I think the school could have done more to foster devotion to St. Joseph but it was the 70s so I guess I should be glad there were at least some nuns still teaching in the full habits and that we had prayer services every day (optional) and school Masses from time to time.

I was in high school in the early 70s and the SSJs were crawling all over themselves to pull off those old habits and exist the order. Everyday seemed to bring a new defection. It really was a terrible Catholic education but luckily I came from a strong Catholic family and the faith managed to survive.

Yeah, it seemed like that order was a very mixed bag in the 70s. The teachers included a lot of former sisters who’d left the order, sisters in their 20s and 30s who were mostly social justice activist types (one of them went around in brief jogging shorts, which was a sight given that she was about 25 with long hair and very long legs), and a handful of older sisters, some in full habits, some in modern habits, some in lay clothing. The older teachers, both in and out of the convent, were very knowledgeable and good at their work, although I felt that a couple of them didn’t really enjoy teaching and it was sort of a penance for them. The younger ones, with one or two exceptions, I could have done without.

  1. To you, O blessed Joseph (Ad te, beate Ioseph)
To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation, and having implored the help of your most holy spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most watchful Guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness; and, as once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die holily, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

Joseph, son of David, husband of Mary, we honor you guardian of the Redeemer and we adore the child you named Jesus. Saint Joseph, patron of the universal church, pray for us that we may be crowned in glory by our Savior!

Hail Joseph, Son of David, the just and the chaste, Wisdom is with you;
blessed are you among all men and blessed is Jesus, the fruit of Mary, your faithful spouse.
Holy Joseph, worthy foster-father of Jesus Christ, pray for us sinners and obtain divine Wisdom for us from God, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. - St Louis de Montfort
