Blessed John Henry Newman's "Lead Kindly Light": My Catholic and Mormon past joyful met today.

Watching the beatification of Cardinal Newman was a great joy for me these past days.

When I realized that he was the one who penned the words to “Lead Kindly Light” I couldnt but help for a warm smile to spread over my face as I reflected on one of my favorite hymns that we would often sing in LDS meetings.

(In LDS hymnals it mentions it (and rightfully so) as an English hymn. But I expect many in LDS wards dont realize that John Henry Newman converted to Catholicism and would eventually become a cardinal on his way to official canonical saithood.)

My thoughts were “Cardinal, that light lead us both of us home. Thank you”

But for me my Mormon past and present day Catholic faith met in today in Coftan Park. My joy was deeply felt.

Hymns and all Sacred Music seems to easily remove the walls that divide the followers of Jesus Christ. All disciples joyfully lift up their voices as one to praise their God. Would that all topics of conversation would first begin by singing hymns together, rejoicing in Christ, praising our Father, and bask in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Then move to meaningless interpretations, reinterpretations, splitting of hair, and then fractionize the meaning of “is”. I so dislike when one degrades the beliefs of another, but I cherish the pursuit of truth. When we jointly seek truth we share what we think we know and move forward together in pursuit of absolute truths. At no time would forget the meaning or the complete demand of our Savior to love one another. As Benedict XVI has said, *
“It is not ideologies that save the world, but only a return to the living God, our Creator, the guarantor of our freedom, the guarantor of what is really good and true. True revolution consists in simply turning to God who is the measure of what is right and who at the same time is everlasting love. And what could ever save us apart from love?”

Thank you for your post. It helps me to start my morning off with a smile and with thanksgiving to God for the way his Spirit moves among us.

It’s one of my favorite hymns. I only am able to sing it at the Mormon ward I attend with my wife. The Catholic hymnals in my parish don’t have it.

How unfortunate. It is in ours and it is sung pretty frequently. 🙂
