Hello,

My family still has blessed palms from previous Palm Sundays. If I am correct, and I don’t 100% know if I am, one should reverently dispose of them by burning them and then burying the ashes. However, what can one do when we burn the blessed palms, and there are ashes left that are too small to keep under watch? May someone who has done this before respond by listing the steps?

Thanks a lot and have a blessed lent,

Andrew K.

You need to be careful that you aren’t treating a blessed sacramental with disrespect, but you also don’t need to be meticulous; that just isn’t necessary.

You may check with your parish; although the time is a bit passed, many parishes collect old palms before Ash Wednesday for burning and use the ashes for people’s foreheads.

They do not have to be completely reduced to ash; at the point you have described, it is fine to proceed to bury them without further effort.

May yours be a blessed and fruitful Lent, Andrew.

What you do is, save them tell next Ash WEDNESDAY,then take to the parish, and they burn them for you, that,s how they have ASHES ,ever year ,ash your Parish when you sould bring them ,for them too burn.

OK, but bear in mind today that many parishes find it more convenient to purchase their ashes from a church supplier, who collected and burned the previous year’s palms. For those parishes who do still do the burning themselves, it is best to get them to the church several weeks before Ash Wednesday. Most will not wait until Shrove Tuesday to do the burning.

Many parishes purchase their ashes for Ash Wednesday, because the ashes are ground fine, which makes distributing them far easier than ashes which by still be tiny chunks of charcoal.

Another possibility would be to see if your palms could be added to the fire on Holy Saturday night. That would seem a fitting end.

The reason people should take them back to the church is because the palm,s are Blessed, and it,s not right too throw them, away, plus many Parish,s still believe in doing it the way ,it was done years back, maybe the bigger Parish might bye them but,I have heard the priest say, don,t forget to bring them next year for the burning off the palm,s.,and some Parish let you know in the Bulletin.
