Blessed Salt

I hope this doesn’t come as a surprise or offend you, if you are not an ordained minister you have no authority to validly bless sacrementals. As a father or mother you can bless your children because you are in authority over them, but the blessing you impart on sacrementals do nothing for what the sacremental is intended to do. If you want blessed salt to fight spiritual battles you want someone with the authority to impart the blessing of God. The evil one knows what authority means, we also need to know.

No, this does not offend me at all. Nor did I believe my priest when he said I should bless the salt myself. That is why I told the other person (on this post) that I was a lay person. I understand authority. I submit to it knowing that is God’s plan for us to practice submitting to earthly authority so we will submit to His full authority over everything and everyone. I am so disappointed I have moved into a parish that the priest would say that blessing salt is part of the old order of the Catholic Church when many of my previous parish priests would hold times of the year that they would bless salt, oil, water besides doing this on a regular basis for those lay people who asked. It was never a problem before. It makes me worry that these priests are in charge of this parish and the university attached to it. What are they teaching our future Catholics?

I don’t think so. Salt used to be very expensive (it is the origin of the word salary), so – as I understand it – spilling salt was seen either as a minor curse caused by the Devil, or as a sinful waste that would attract the Devil. Either way, you threw salt over your shoulder to blind Old Nick, who was creeping up behind you – on the left (sinister) side, of course.

I have a question about blessed salt. I sprinkled it around my house about two days ago, but now I’m cleaning. I"m sure that when I sweep, some of it is coming into the dustpan. Is this allowable???

That isn’t a problem and is why the blessing of your house and rooms can be a continual spiritual practice. What would be a problem is if you threw a whole container of blessed salt in the garbage can.

I move a lot so this is disappointing. I currently live in Chicago. I am having a bad experience with the priests at St. Vincent DePaul Church. When I lived in London the priest had no problem blessing salt. This is just one of the many places I have lived. I was told once that Chicago is having a priest problem, but I never thought anything about it because only one person said it. However, I am finding that these problems are not confined to only one priest. This is not the only Church I have attended in Chicago. Like I said I move frequently. I am hoping to move again into a better parish. I feel bad for the students that attend St. Vincent DePaul University connected with this church. I wonder what sort of Catholic instruction they are (or maybe are not) receiving.

Boy, I hear ya. I live in the Chicago area as well…outside of Chicago, but still in the Archdiocese. Some diocese I suppose are more modernistic than others, and I find Chicago to be quite modernistic. We are very short on priests at the moment, which makes it even harder. This being said, there are a few priests that are quite orthodox in their theology…keep your eyes open for them!
