I saw a picture online. It showed the BVM having the wounds of Christ. I have heard that Mary suffered all that Jesus suffered, is that true?

Care to share said picture? 🙂 I wouldn’t comment on a picture I haven’t seen.

I believe every loving mother suffers along with their child when the child is suffering. Mary, having immense love for her son, must have suffered greatly along with him, spiritually if not physically. Hence Simeon’s words to her that a sword would pierce her own heart.

It is not Catholic teaching that Mary physically suffered every single wound, pain, emotion Christ did during his passion and death or bore those wounds on her body. Cannot comment on the picture you saw, so I won’t, don’t know its source. However recall that in the bible, Luke’s account of her meeting with Simeon in the Temple on the occasion of the Presentation of the child Jesus, he propheseyed that her heart would be pierced by a sword, a poetic promise that she would suffer on account of her Son. And yes as any mother knows, when your child suffers, you suffer, too.

Is it the very same picture that is found all over the vehemently anti-catholic websites? Do you mean this one?

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Well my bet is that the anti-catholic just drew this so he could criticise us. And if he didn’t what authority this picture has over the teachings of the Church? Personally I’m very uncomfortable with this picture as well.

Properly understood that picture causes me no problems at all.

However, it can very easily be misunderstood, sadly.

Yes, that’s what I thought as well. If it was indeed drawn by a catholic then he clearly didn’t mean to suggest that she was crucified or something like that. But I wouldn’t go around showing this picture to anyone because it’s very easily misunderstood.
