Hello,
Recently I have acquired a cross pendant to wear to help remind me of Christ in troubled times. I want to have my local priest bless the pendant, but it brought up two interesting questions to me. The first is, it is a cross, not a crucifix. Does this matter? As a Catholic, I know we are supposed to remember the sacrifice Christ made, however I really liked the pendant and they didn’t have a crucifix one. Does this matter? Will the priest not bless it? Also, what exactly does the priest’s blessing do for the pendant? I have heard many different things, such as warding off evil and other things, and would like some feedback on this. Thanks in advance!

Of course a priest will bless a cross. I personally wear a Celtic Cross, and not being a crusafix, there is no Corpus on it. 👍

I only wear a cross. It was a gift from my mother at my Confirmation. I do own a crucifix, also a gift, but I don’t wear it. Wearing my cross reminds me of Christ as I go about my day. I don’t personally feel it matters that I wear a cross rather than a crucifix. I’ve never had it blessed but there is no reason (that I know of) you cannot have your pendant blessed.

This is apparently a prayer for blessing crosses/crucifixes, it may help you understand what the blessing does:
Heavenly Father,
you sent your Son to us because you love us,
and want to save us.
By the power of his cross,
free us from sin
and let us live each day for you.
Bless + this sign of glory,
and let it remind us
that Jesus died and rose for all.
Help us to carry our cross with him every day,
and to follow him in serving others.
We ask this grace
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

By having it blessed, it becomes a “sacramental”, something to remind us of our daily walk of Faith with G-d. That’s why wedding rings, rosaries, scapulars, holy cards are blessed.

Be careful: once such an item is blessed, it is not to be carelessly discarded. It should NEVER be put in the trash, but buried, burned or kept as a keepsake.

May G-d give you His blessings for wearing His Cross!

The first is, it is a cross, not a crucifix. Does this matter?
no if it is a piece of religious jewelry the priest or deacon will be glad to bless it, which does not confer any magic powers, I don’t know who has been feeding you that stuff, but sets it apart as a sacramental used to aid your devotion. The blessing gives no special “powers” to the object, but strengthens your own devotion.
