A friend of mine is a seminarian in FSSP, and he told me that after the TLM is over the priest gives the alter servers a special blessing in the sacristy. I serve for the Traditional Mass as well, and the two priests I serve for are not sure about the content of the priest’s prayer for blessing. Does anyone know what the priest is supposed to say? This would be when they return to the sacristy immediately following the Mass and after they bow to the crucifix and say the “Prosit. Pro Omnibus et Singulis.” The servers then kneel down, and the priest says what to bless them?

I believe this is the way: the priest bows to the crucifix saying, “Pro sit,” and afterwards blesses the servers saying, “Gratiam agimus” who respond, “pro omnibus et singulis”.

Surely there’s more to it than that? None of that constitutes a blessing at all.

I served as an altar boy, and we also did this following mass.

The priest would give a blessing as he would outside of Mass.
If at Low Mass be sure the priest places the veiled chalice on the table in the sacristy BEFORE giving the blessing.👍

Priest: Prosit
Server(s): Omnibus et singulus Jube Domne Benedicere
Priest: “Benedictio Dei Omnipotentis Patris, et Filiis, et Spiritus Sanctis Descendat super vos et maneat semper. Amen”😃

Blessings for servers after Mass are optional if the Mass said was a Requiem because the congregation doesn’t receive a blessing.

In the Ordinary Form mass said in my Parish, it is customary for all altar servers, acolytes and other ministers to gather, all face the crucifix on the wall of the sacristy and together pray “Thanks be to God” (or in my own case, “Deo Gratias”).

There is also a prayer said by the priest before mass in the presence of the servers, acolytes and the reader who is processing in the Gospel, but I am not sure what it is.

This must be a local custom. The Missale Romanum does not have such formula, neither the ‘Ritus Servandus’ mentions the blessing of the servers. In the Appendix of the Missal there is a ‘Benedictio ad omnia’ but that is mostly for objects, not people.

That sounds about right. The only thing is that I’m fairly certain there’s a pro before the omnibus because *omnibus *and singulis could be in the ablative form and pro can be then used to reiterate that it’s on behalf of them. I’ve read this elsewhere online in trying to figure out what the priest says. Thanks! I think we’re going to use this for our next Mass! Do you possibly know a source for this? It’s crazy when you have to try to figure out exactly how all the details of the Holy Mass used to be performed 50 years ago, especially since it was codified in its present form at Trent, though it obviously dates back in the same form since at least pope St. Gregory the Great or earlier.

It is common at least throughout the U.S. It has been done at most EF Masses that I have served, and I have traveled throughout the country. This may also be helpful: pro-omnibus-et-singulis.blogspot.com/2006/07/pro-sit.html

A couple of Sundays ago, I was not feeling well and happened to be in the vestibule when Mass ended (ordinary form). As soon as the pastor and alar servers processed out, the servers knelt down in the vestibule while one held the processional crucifix, and Father blessed them all before they returned to the sacristy.

P.S. But our pastor does offer Mass in the extraordinary form twice a month.

Here is how it is done at the FSSP parish I attend:

Before Mass, we bow to the Cross in the Sacristy and the Priest says, “Procedamus in pace.” to which the servers respond, “In nomine Christi. Amen.”

Then, after Mass, once again all bow to the Cross and Father says, “Prosit.” To which the servers respond, “Omnibus et singulis.” All kneel and the MC will say, “Jube, domne, benedicere.”

Finally, the Priest will say the blessing, “Benedictio Dei Omnipotentis Patris, et Filiis, et Spiritus Sanctis Descendat super vos et maneat semper.” while all Cross themselves and respond, “Amen”.

Hope this helps! 👍

By the way, it’s funny to see that you have the same name as me, but in the proper Latin gender endings.

Thanks definitely helpful. Looks like I came up with my name just 3 months before you did. 🙂 Feels like I’ve had it forever. I will admit the “una” corresponds to the feminine word “fides” so it makes it sound as if I am a girl, which is not good since that’s definitely not the case. I still like the name though and have grown accustomed to it.

That sounds about right. However the correct Latin version is:
Priest: Prosit
Server(s): Omnibus et singulis Jube Domne Benedicere
Priest: “Benedictio Dei Omnipotentis Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti descendat super vos et maneat semper. Amen”
