I was reading CCC §1696 and around there concerning blessings. All are called to bless the CCC says. Does that mean we bless as does the priest after Mass? By making the sign of the cross and pronouncing the persons?

Not at all. Almost all public blessings, like that at Mass and those involved with sacraments and sacramentals, are reserved to the sacerdotal priesthood. The general priesthood in which we participate is to be a blessing to the world, but not through formal, liturgical means.

We may also bless family members and others we love. But it is a private blessing, not public or liturgical.

When someone sneezes in the office, I say “God Bless you.” Sincerely.

I’ve asked for blessings for family members and friends in the hospital. I’ve prayed for blessings for those who have died, become ill, had experienced unexpected challenges in life, etc.

What’s important to remember is that we are not the source of blessings; rather, we are just the instrument that God may act through. God Bless you!

When I visit my sweetheart’s parish, the priest has the whole congregation raise their hands to bless the EMHC folks taking the Eucharist to the homebound. That’s always felt awkward and inappropriate to me, so I don’t participate. Am I being a stick in the mud?? 🤷

Apparently laity can bless children. A women at Mass was blessing children which I found strange but apparently this is ok? 🤷

It is a nice gesture but it does not carry the weight of a sacramental given by a Priest, those things are best left at home to do, and at Mass let everyone receive the sacramental blessing given by a priest as a blessing given by a lay person is on a different track entirely. Holy gesture, like blessing oneself.

A good book to read would be the Catechism or a great book called Catholicism for Dummies I have both the latter is an easy read and well laid out. Unfortunately a lot of Cradle Catholics do not know the Faith they profess, they will know about football, women’s articles they will read, but what they profess No…

You can bless your own children and a catechist can bless those in her/his charge.

A blessing is when we call on God to be with someone. I don’t really think God “weighs” the person calling on Him for intercession. Somehow, I think God is delighted in the love shown to the recipient of the blessing by the person doing the blessing, and for the faith shown in calling on Him.

She was doing the blessings after communion instead of the priest. I’ve only ever seen Priests do this in the communion line but at this parish, a woman was.
But anyway that was a strange Parish. No crucifix, no kneeling, children were allowed to run around on the alter during the blessing of the sacrament…
Never went there again.

This part of your definition of “strange” seems strange in itself.

What you don’t personally like, is not necessarily “strange”.🤷

I found it strange that a parish could be so disrespectful. There was plenty more things than this that I didn’t like but the thread isn’t about me or my experience it’s about the OP.

Oh my that’s almost if not blasphemy I would think.
