Blessing Children at Communion

Recently I was attenting Mass at my Daughter’s church in a Chicago suburb. They asked me to assist in distributing communion to which I agreed. Then they said that we have a custom here at this church to make a sign of the cross on a child’s head if they are too young to properly receive communion.
I said that this smacks of a ministerial blessing which would be wrong for me to do, so I declined to distribute communion. Then came the conflict with my daughter about the subject. Will you please assist with the this issue. Perphaps I am in error. I would just like to show my daughter the documention of the church’s teaching on the subject
