Last week a member of our parish was ordained to the priesthood. This week he performed one of the Masses at church today. There was a reception afterwards and we were invited to attend and receive a blessing.

My sponsor from RCIA attended the same mass. When we were standing in line for a blessing I asked her if this was a traditional thing to receive a blessing from a newly ordained priest and she said yes.

I’m a recent convert to the faith and I’m still learning so much. Could someone who knows more than I do please elaborate on this tradition. Is there some significance to getting a blessing from a newly ordained priest

Participating in the first Mass of a priest and receiving his blessing carries with it a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions, (1) performing the act (attending the Mass) (2) Free from attachment from sin with a Confession within a few days (3) Prayers for the Pope.
