I am sorry if this does not go here. I couldn’t find a place where the question would fit.

I will give the Cliff’s Notes version of a very long story. My friend’s husband committed suicide on the front lawn of their house. This happened almost a year ago. She and her children left their house for some time but due to financial circumstances, they must return. The situation surrounding the suicide involved some of the greatest horrors possible here on Earth. Often when I go to this house, I feel the presence of evil. My friend has stated that the children are often scared and it’s a general bad feeling all over the house.

My friend is not Catholic (I am) but is Christian (Pentecostal). Is there anything I can do to help “cleanse” this house? Possibly blessing it with Holy Water and prayer? It’s not something I’ve ever done before so I don’t really know what to do.

Thank you for your thoughts on this.

A Priest is able to do a blessing on a house to purify it of any residual evil. Would your friend be open to you inviting a Catholic Priest to the house to complete this task?

Please do not fall into any other form of “purifying” or “cleansing”. Christ entrusted the Church with handling demons–not anybody else, no matter what they may say.

Your friend might actually appreciate a house blessing done by a priest, even if she isn’t a Catholic. It’s a very fine ritual.

We’ve had two houses blessed, and a non-Catholic friend present and my initially unenthusiastic tween daughter were both very happy about the experience.

I would suggest two things to your dear friend. Ask her if she would like her pastor or your priest to bless the home. They would not be the same type blessing, but she might rather have her pastor offer prayers at her home than a Catholic priest.

Your friend and her children could probably be helped with therapy for the trauma they have lived. The place of the trauma can make the situation even worse. With proper therapy, people can heal and learn to no longer place the feelings of horror onto the place where the event occurred.
