I grew up having various sacramentals blessed but never understood why. What is the difference between having a blessed vs. a nonblessed object or home for that matter?

I always thought if was for protection from the spiritual warfare (demons and such).

The General Instruction to the Book of Blessings highlights in part that blessings such as these contribute to the praise of God, source of all blessings. The formulas for these blessings on objects and places connected with human activity are centered on giving God glory for his gifts, imploring his favor, and restraining the power of evil in this world. (paragraphs 8-12).

While there is a blessing for a new home, there is also an order for an annual blessing of families in their own homes. I’ll just write about those.

In the former case, Christ is asked to shelter the people who will live there, be their companion while away, and their welcome guest when they return, finally to receive them into the dwelling prepared for them in his Father’s house.

In the latter case, God’s blessing is called upon the family so that they may continually be instruments of his grace to one another and instruments of faith in all circumstances of life. The concluding rite asked the Lord to dwell with the family, keep it from all evil, and make its members one in heart and mind.

Both rites are rich in their use of Scripture.

I just had my statues of Peter, Mary, and Jesus blessed today.
