Blessing Objects

I always had a question about priests blessing objects like Cars and Houses - what is the blessing about. Is it just to ask the grace of God to protect the people in the house or car? What about blessing Bibles? Aren’t Bibles already Holy since they contain the Word of God? What exactly does a blessing do?
