Blessing of Child in the womb. Is it only for live children?

We’ve had a missed miscarriage. Baby is still inside my wife, and we have a D and C scheduled after two failed attempts to push the lifeless baby out of my wife. The D and C is tomorrow. (Please pray for us.)

I at least would like to have the baby blessed so I thought about the blessing. We’ve asked our parish priest and sadly were declined. The priest’s response was a bit strange to me, saying that since it’s not a funeral there’s no blessing for it. He only gave my wife a generic blessing like the one after Mass.

I would like to know is this blessing reserved only for children who are alive?

I don’t know the answer to your question but I am so sorry for your loss. I will put you and the baby into my prayers. It’s a shame the priest didn’t do a more specific blessing.

I’m so sorry for your loss . Maybe he thought you meant the rite for the Blessing of Child in the womb, and so the wording wouldn’t match the blessing you wanted for your sweet little one?
I’m so sorry you had an upsetting experience when asking for a blessing for your baby.

Absolutely I think the baby could be blessed (I don’t know the correct answer either, but I agree with what you are saying), and I am hoping the priest just meant he would not use that wording, but that the blessing he gave you was intended to include/bless your sweet little one.

I pray that the Virgin Mary may hold you under Her mantle to help you have peace and serenity in these difficult times. You will all be in my prayers tomorrow.

Perhaps the Priest was unfamiliar with the Blessing you describe. In any case, God knows the desires of your heart to Bless your baby. How could God deny, two loving parents, who seek Spiritual Blessing for their child? He will not.

Please, hold hands with your wife, and ask God for the blessings of Baptism for your child, and any other requests you may share. Baptism of desire, is when God can bestow upon your child all the Graces, and effects of Baptism, that you would have sought for your child if you were given the opportunity. Baptism removes the stain of Original sin, and fills the soul with God’s grace, so your baby can go straight to Heaven!

May God’s hand be upon you both, and comfort you during this time of loss, and grief.

My sister went through this about 2 years ago just a little bit different situation. Since I work at a hospital I asked the Chaplins here. They way he explained it to me is it is up to the priest / decon / minister. Each will have their own take on it. But the most common form he said was to bless the mothers stomach with water marking the baptism of the child. Again, our situation was different and the baby was still alive but with no chance of survival. If your priest said no I would arrive early to the hospital and ask to speak with a chaplin on staff. I’m so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your family at this time.
