Hi all,

I recently purchased my first rosary, and I settled on a St. Benedict one. I also got a St. Benedict medal to wear. I would like to get both blessed. But I was reading that there is a separate “exorcism” blessing for St. Benedict items. Is this true? Should I ask the Priest to do a special blessing for the medal and Rosary?

Thanks!
Adam

Talk to your priest. He knows what to do.

There is a special blessing osb.org/gen/medal.html

This was the blessing I saw. Is that just for the stand-alone medal I wonder, or the rosary too since it also has the St. Benedict medal on it in three places.

What’s the difference between the two different blessings? Sorry for the silly questions, this is new to me. 🙂

In order to obtain the full benefits the Church has attached to the St. Benedict medal, it must be blessed according to the official rite (linked above), by any priest (doesn’t have to be a Benedictine). A general blessing of the rosary is a good idea, but will not confer the aforementioned benefits.

I think it is a pious practice to have these items blessed, but I don’t know what a blessing does for a sacramental.

Or, what a blessing does for animals blessed on Oct 4, the feast of St. Francis.

Of course, it involves a prayer over people, animals, or objects. so far so good. But, then people agonize over broken rosaries that were blessed, Bibles that have worn out, etc.

Brass tacks: I don’t know of any rule in the Church (e.g. Canon Law) that requires a blessing over sacramentals.

I’d rather have an unblessed rosary and just pray the rosary, period. It’s not like it’s invalid because it’s not blessed.

At my church, someone left for grabs a leaded glass bead rosary that was blessed at the Vatican. I took it and eventually gave it to a relative. Although I prefer a nylon string based rosary for durability, I think another direction of thought is to have a very beautiful rosary, whether you are a man or woman.

Hello,

I was able to catch up with my priest and he did a general blessing of the St. Benedict medal along with my crucifix and Miraculous Medal. Is that sufficient? It wasn’t the St.Benedict blessing. If there is more that should have been done, I can ask the Deacon this Tuesday otherwise.

Thanks!

Your priest knows…
Not always the case. A lot of priests have no idea how to bless sacramentals.

Fin the correct blessing and take it to him. He will either appreciate it or be irritated. Either way, he won’t turn you down unless he’s a monster and he may just learn something he didn’t know before.

Yeah I’m thinking he’d be irritated if I ask him to re-bless it. That’s why I’m leaning towards talking to the Deacon in my RCIA class.
