Hello all. I’m a neophyte. 💓 I was recently given all these gifts on Easter Vigil after being baptised, confirmed and received my first communion. Most of the items are not blessed and I was told I couldn’t use them unless they were blessed by a priest. So my question is do I have to have my items blessed in order to use them or can I bless them with the holy water I have?(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) I’ve never been under the impression that you can’t use sacramentals that haven’t been blessed (except for the brown scapular), though many people may simply choose not to. The blessing from a priest designates the items to a Holy purpose, though, so that’s why it’s nice to have blessed rosaries and statues and crucifixes and such. 🙂

Really beautiful gifts!! I received the Sacraments on the 20th as well. God bless ❤️

Congratulations! Welcome to the family and church! I’m so happy for you! God bless! 💗

Welcome to the Church!

You can use any sacramental (such as rosary, prayer book etc) without its being blessed. You do not need to have things blessed in order to use them. The blessing just conveys an extra sacramental as the blessing itself is a sacramental according to the Catechism.

You yourself cannot bless items; they need to be blessed by a priest. You can ask the priest to bless them, perhaps make an appointment to meet with him for this.

Please remember that once an item is blessed, you need to treat it with some reverence and be careful about disposing of it; you can’t just toss it in the trash or the Goodwill bin. People normally have their rosaries, crosses, medals and scapulars blessed. Some people have their statues blessed. People may or may not have their prayer books blessed; I have so many little paperback prayer books it would be a hassle to have them all blessed and keep track of them, so it’s something I would only do with a heirloom Bible or book. The cheaper prayer books I leave unblessed in case I would just want to give them away or I accidentally lose them or something.

I’m not sure if the priest would bless your necklace. It’s beautiful, but it’s secular jewelry. Some priests will only bless religious items, other priests will bless anything. You can ask him.
