Why would anyone bless a gun?
For the same reason that a person has a car blessed.

How about:

Lord, may all those who are ever associated with this gun, including its original owner here present, whether he does the deed himself or not, be allowed to fall on thy divine mercy when it is used for its purposeful intent to maim or kill someone even though not in defense of life.

So, are you saying that a firearm should not be used for self defense purposes?

So, the whole point of guns are to “maim or kill someone”. Wow, that’s lame.

Stop gorging yourself at the trough of lies fed to us by the rabid anti-gunners. There are millions upon millions of guns in this country-and the VAST majority of them are never used in any manner of accident, murder, self-defense situation or anything else that would “maim or kill someone”.
What is wrong with blessing military weapons? In the Divine Liturgy, we pray for our nation’s victory over its enemies.
I think that may fall under the issue of prudence. It may be acceptible to bless a aircraft carrier-but maybe folks would find it a bit strange to bless a nuclear missle. Sounds stupid, I know, but sometimes it is better to play nicey nice.

I was taught to shoot by the Catholic Church.

I spend a few summers at a Catholic summer camp. During the year it was a Seminary, but became a summer camp during break. The Seminarians who stayed were the counselors.

They had a rifle range on location and we shot .22’s almost every day.

We took away the guns; they used knives.

We took away the knives; they used clubs.

We took away the clubs, they used hammers.

We took away the hammers; they used rocks.

We tried to take away the rocks, but there were too many rocks to take away.

Suddenly it dawned on us that the problem wasn’t the choice of weapon, it was fallen human nature.

(shrug)

A blessing for a gun? Why not? Reminds me of the Weather Prayer:

“Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen.”

(Chaplain James H. O’Neill, composed for General George S. Patton.)

(Adapted from Fiddler on the Roof)

“May God bless and keep this gun–far away from me!”

Think about that prayer the next time you need to call the police for help – basicly, calling someone with a GUN for help.

Look at the smiley and lighten up. It was a joke.

If you’d read my other postings on other threads on this subject, you’d know that I have a carry permit and wouldn’t hesitate to obtain a handgun and use it to protect myself and my wife, should the culture in northern Alabama ever deteriorate to the point where I felt I needed to.

What do you carry? I carry a Sig 229 during the colder months and a 239 during the warmer months. Both in 40S&W.

Beretta 9000s in 9mm here.

I’ve got a 9000s as well but in .40S&W. Got it when the ban was still in effect. Figured that 10 rounds of .40 would be a better choice than 10 rounds of 9mm. If I were to buy it now, I would have opted for the 12 rounds of 9mm that now comes standard with the 9000s.

I don’t carry anything right now; note where I said that I “wouldn’t hesitate to obtain an handgun.” I’ve done some reading on the subject, and it looks to me that there is a lot of very usable merchandise out there. It would probably be whatever jumped off the table and into my hand at one of the bi-monthly local gun shows that they have.

Having said that, the local culture is so laid back and friendly that I haven’t seen any need to obtain a handgun. I keep the permit current, just in case. SU is dead set against having one in the house, but I have a feeling that if anything ever happened to hurt her that could have been prevented by my being armed, she would frog-march me down to the pawn shop and force me to buy a handgun 😃

Hmm, wonder if Father Kevin has a blessing for handguns (to come back full circle to the OP’s question…)

As I have small children in the house, all my firearms are locked in a safe and I keep swallowing&retrieving it every few days 😃 .Not really, but the key is so well hid&out of reach it would take me too long for my firearms to be a factor in a defense situation. So I sleep with a ka-bar tucked behind my head board. As long as a intruder does not have a gun,I am confident in the 12 point knife fighting skills that I have learned&maintain. Before the kids came along,I kept my taurus .357 mag in the head board. But,we live in a nice area,I m not too worried about it.These days the guns are more for a fun day out at the range and a deer hunt or two every year.

I’m in kind of the same situation.
Small kids in the house and all, so when I don’t have my gun on me, it’s in a safe that would be impractical to get to quickly.

That’s part of the whole thing, one evaluates their own personal needs for safety.

We do re-enactments so that is where our gun collection gets it’s most use. I’ve also done medival re-enacting for 20 years, so my bedside protection is a claymore broadsword 😉

The whole point of being armed all of the time is because in most cases tragedy will strike at a time and place of not of OUR choosing.

Just remember that someone could live in a community with a 40% crime rate and be one of the lucky 60% that is not touched by crime. Conversely, another person could live in a community with a 1% crime rate and be one of the unlucky 1% that IS touched by crime.

So as to not hi-jack this thread, if you wish to discuss firearms issues further, I invite you to join a discussion board that I co-own and operate.

Sir Knight:
Our Pastor is a avid hunter and often carries a CCW under his garments, if there was a specific blessing for firearms, I’m pretty sure he would be performing it with the other annual blessings.
The late, former pastor of the local Novus Ordo parish that I used to attend, oftentimes would carry a concealed .38 revolver. This was when New Mexico had no provision for legal concealed carry.

I think he could have been persuaded to bless one’s target, hunting, or defense weapons.
