If something is blessed, by say a priest, what does that do exactly? Do blessed things invoke the favor of God? What do they do?

A blessing sets the item apart for a sacred purpose.

It has no power unto itself.

Nothing. It serves, as is true for all sacramentals, as a reminder to us of our call to holiness.
I don’t get it, so it reminds us of something by being blessed?

If it does nothing, how come I always hear of holy water being a weapon against the devil?

Having an item blessed, say a rosary, actually bestows the blessing on the person using the item for it’s intended purpose, not so much the item. Each time you put on a metal, a St. Christopher metal for example, you are asking that saint to watch over you and pray to God for your protection and guidance.

All sacramentals are for the benefit of the person, not the object, and are used as an outward “mark” of who we are and what we are. They show the world who we belong to: Christ.

So medals that are blessed invoke the intercession of that particular Saint?

Well, since we’re talking about medals, heres another question, are there particular medals for males and females? Because I dont think I’ve ever heard of a guy wearing a miraculous medal and such.

So would getting your house blessed be like praying to God to protect my house or protect me while I am in the house??

Yes, having your house blessed is to protect those who live within that house and also those visiting.

Medals are not necessarily male or female. A man can wear a miraculous medal, etc… It is just whatever saint you feel drawn to. I, for example, am partial to St. Michael the Archangel and the Sacred Heart and I am female

They invoke the intercession of that particular saint and they also remind us to pray for their assistance.
