Blizzard for March for Life

The Washington DC area is under a Blizzard Warning for high winds and 1 to 2 feet of snow Friday into Saturday.

If you have any kids (or yourself) coming to the March, I would not come. An inch of snow at rush hour paralyzed the region last night…

The web site says they are going forward with it The snow isn’t supposed to start until noon to five, but that is imprecise.

I would not want to get stuck in the District on a bus.

There are so many moving pieces (e.g. speakers, travel arrangements, permits, etc.) that I don’t see how they could postpone it. It looks like they are going ahead with it. I imagine the turnout will be impacted by the weather, though.

Lots of opportunity for mortification. :o

We ought to be praying hard for those who do attend!

The blizzard probably means more life will be created. The sad irony is that the abortion rate will bump in the dc area after the blizzard.

Probably just as well, I’m not sure there is any effectiveness of the march anymore anyway.

Perhaps I’m cynical, but I don’t see it being in the least effective on a political level. I just don’t think that more than the very occasional, low-level politician gives a flying defecation about pro-lifers anymore. I do, however, see it being very effective on a personal/spiritual level, especially for young people.

I went as a teenager, and was blown away. Admittedly, I was very sheltered, but I didn’t really know that there were many young people involved in their faith or in pro-life ministry. To spend a couple of days praying, attending Mass, and then attending the rally and March with them was decidedly lifechanging: it gave me hope, it meant I didn’t feel alone, and it made me feel a part of something much bigger than myself. Really, it was the first time I felt like a member of the church as a whole.

ETA: Also, I can’t help but think that thousands of people attending Mass and praying the Rosary together to end abortion must result in some sort of spiritual good, both for them and for those involved in abortion. At the very least, I can’t see it doing any harm!

Very true!
 
A lot of flights are being cancelled, so keep an eye out for that if you’re travelling through here. And yesterday was insane with barely any snow. I’m a bit scared to see how this area deals with more than a foot. Be especially careful if you’re driving; driving around here is nerve-wracking in perfect weather and they’re predicting white-out conditions!

American Airlines is cancelling flights into the three DC airports as of 3:30 PM Friday and all day Saturday.

Adoration for me tomorrow. Also, DH pointed out that last year the token pro-choice people got all the media coverage despite overwhelming pro-life marchers. I will be sure to say the Holy Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet!
 
I can see the headlines now: “Pro-lifers risk their own children’s lives attending March For Life 2016.” :o
 
Why in the world did the one inch of snow cause such a panic? They get snow every year. Was it an overreaction to the upcoming predictions?

In addition to the cancelled flights, the metro is shutting down at 11:00pm on Friday night. The march will be over long before that, but if a bus gets stuck and people need a ride out, they will be in trouble.

Every trip I know of has been cancelled, even ones close to town.

A blizzard is supposed to occur during the March for Life’s scheduled hours. 2 feet of snow predicted. Freezing temps. Strong gusty winds. The works.

Based on my time living here, I think the one inch disaster happened mainly due to a) lack of planning, because the snow was a total surprise, b) bad timing: right during rush hour, and c) the roads and other drivers are difficult to navigate on a good day, especially during rush hour. There are plenty of perilous short weave areas that I come across on a weekly basis, and I can only imagine trying to weave in and out on snowy, slippery roads. Also, on a more psychological level, there seem to be a lot of people who genuinely freak out over snow, and that can’t help.

I think you are two thirds right.

Number 1 - the snow was predicted three or four days out. The Departments of Transportation managers act as if they all are from Florida, and weren’t here last year, or the year before that…

An inch of snow on roads that are frozen (it’s been below freezing all week) will stick immediately. Rush hours complicates it.

Several jurisdictions said they didn’t pretreat the roads with brine because it was too cold. When asked if that was an indicator that the snow would stick immediately and they should mobilize the salt spreaders in anticipation, they said, “Well, we’ve learned from this.”

LEARNED? The same thing happens every year!

Oh, my mistake! I hadn’t heard anything about snow coming that day and it wasn’t on the weather app I used, so I assumed it was unexpected. And yeah, they really do need to be better at pre-treating the roads. And removing the snow afterwards.
