A while back I posted a poll about which missal you will be purchasing.

I found a blog post today from the National Catholic Register about why have your own missal.

ncregister.com/blog/dan-burke/seven-reasons-to-own-your-own-missal/

On the previous thread we got a little off topic at times discussing the purpose or should we even have our own missals. I thought it was an interesting discussion. So… lets discuss.

I particularly like the suggestion of having a home alter. This is a practice I’m trying to start in my new home.

My mother grew up next to her parish. They had a home alter, and on the feast of Corpus Christi they would move it to the front porch and it would become a stop on the parish’s procession.

Does anyone still practice this?

I have always used a hand missal. I first started in the early 70’s when i received one as a gift and have been using one ever since. Active participation as discused in the Catechism and in the Documents of the 2nd Vatican Council point to actively following the Mass and offering yourself along with the Sacrifice of the Priest. I find using a missal and following the entire liturgy helpful to focus my mind to the Mass. My mind does not wander, i am not looking around at anyone else, and i inwardly recite the prayers along with the Priest. I also read the daily Mass at home when unable to attend. The missal, along with the Daily Prayer version of the Liturgy of The Hours becomes the backbone of my prayer life.

I have a Missal for the ExtraOrdinary Form Mass (1962 Version by Baronius Press) but do not have the same version for the Ordinary Form of the Mass. I have a small hand missal from my First Communion day that has prayers and Mass in it but no readings, propers, etc in it at all. If I could get an inexpensive one, then yes, I would get one too for the Ordinary Form & use it there.

I’ve been Catholic for about seven years now and I have not as of yet owned my own missal. However with the new translation and the recommendation of our parish priest I have put a missal on my Christmas list. I hope I get it and know that it will serve me well, quite possibly for the rest of my life.

I think the NCR article is spot on and brings up some many wonderful points especially about it being a treasure of Catholic prayers or about the lives of saints being a model for those of us struggling to be holy.
