Blood from the Chalice

Today at Communion, I received from the Chalice as usual but for some reason, I put my thumb and index finger up to the corners of my mouth because I thought I felt some moisture. I didn’t feel anything on my hands but when I realized that I might have just touched the Blood I was a little upset.
However, I used to receive Communion in the hand (even as recently as a month or two ago) and I was trying to convince myself that my action today wasn’t much different than that. I didn’t mean to desecrate the Blood of Christ and I don’t even know if there really was much of the Blood there.

Anyway, I didn’t have a chance to ask the priest after Mass and so I was wondering what your opinions are? Please do not say I’m being scrupulous. This is a matter of the Blood of Christ and I would like to know.

What’s the difference between touching the Host with your hand and touching a drop of the Precious Blood? What’s the difference between touching a drop of the Precious Blood with your hand and touching it with your tongue? It’s all in the intention. You didn’t intend to desecrate the Blessed Sacrament. Be at peace.

I can’t remember which Saint, but one of the fathers from Alexandria, said something in a tract about the Blessed Sacrament that I have taken on as a practice.

Invariably, after receiving the cup there is traces of the Precious Blood left on our lips.

I wipe in off with my fingers and then trace the sign of the cross over my eyes and ears so that I may see the goodness of the Lord, and hear and understand His Word.

I agree with Fr ACEGC. What’s important is the intention. What’s in the heart is what you are. There are lots of things that we cannot avoid or help. If we are overly scrupulous, sometimes that can lead to being unreasonably ridiculous. What is reverence and where does it ends? We can do only so much in the way we handle the Eucharist but most important is our intention.

I have seen EMHC / priest who trip and the whole ciborium of hosts scattered on the floor. The EMHC was quite old and eventually he was decommissioned.

Human mistake does happen or sometimes the unexpected happens. We can only be the wiser the next time.
