A footnote in my Douay-Rhiems Bible says that the prohibition by the Council at Jerusalem in the Book of Acts against strangled food and blood was an ancient discipline, which, having no purpose anymore, was allowed to lapse long ago.

I guess it probably did refer more to meat sacrificed to idols.

It also seems to me (and this is just a personal observation) like the Apostles held that the 7 commandments given to Noah in Genesis 9 were still binding, even though the law of Moses had been fulfilled by Christ. The Jewish faith holds these ‘Noahide Laws’ as being binding on righteous gentiles as well as Jews, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noahide_laws because they were given to the whole human race when God gave us a ‘new start’ after the flood.

If the Apostles were building on the foundation that Christ had abolished the division between Jews and gentiles, they may have still held that the basic laws for the whole of humanity applied. One of these laws is a prohibition against unnecessary cruelty to animals (not taking meat from a living animal), which may also be a reason for the prohibition against strangled meat and blood. I think the way we treat animals is pretty important personally, because the way we treat the animals under our stewardship ought to echo the way God treats His human flock. That’s why I rarely eat meat (will have turkey at Christmas to avoid family arguments) and am careful where my eggs come from.

Though I’ve got to say, I do miss good old fashioned British black pudding with bacon, sausage and eggs on a Sunday morning!

OK, here’s another one for youse: czarnina, i.e., duck blood soup. No, it’s not pure blood, but there is some blood added to it.
Better not let anyone see me putting ketchup on my kilbasa then… 😛
I had an uncle who would put ketchup in his soup - I think I even recall him putting it in chicken soup!

Hi

Is it lawful according to the church to eat black pudding or so called blood sausage?

Im not sure about this as i know that Jesus permitted every kind of food but i think it was Paul who said that we should not eat blood for in it is the soul of all living things.

What is the church ruling about this?
Acts 10:9-15

About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”

I think it’s clear you can eat whatever you want.

Blood is for sure legal to eat and drink! Otherwise receiving the Blood of Christ would be a sin if it was!
