Blood tinged CM

First, I just want to say that I am not soliciting medical advice. I have already talked to my doctor about this and have tests done to rule out cancer and she has said that it isn’t caused by hormones as mine are clearly fine.

I’ve had a few cycle though where my CM has had streaks of blood in it, mostly a little bit, but once with a lot. Prior to that, it had always been clear, and now it seems to be again.

I guess I am just posting more out of curiosity rather than concern. With so many posters here knowing NFP, I thought that there might be people with a little more insight into what possible explanations there could be. I’ve tried googling, but have come up with nothing.

If it’s around ovulation time (just before, during or just after), that happens and is completely normal for some women.

If it happens within twenty four hours (sometimes up to forty eight) after martial relations, that’s completely normal for a lot of women. And, if you have mucous at that time anyway, it would just come out with that.

Also, just before, during, or just after menstruation you can have mucous tinged with blood.

One more thing, during the time of implantation, your mucous often increases and you can have slight bleeding during this time too.

Timingwise it would have been just before ovulation. Does anyone know why there could be blood then, when there was enough time between the end of menstruation and there had been no relations at all?

Okay, I’m waiting for the experts to pop on anytime now. But, until they do, it has to do with how the egg bursts forth from your ovaries each month. This can lead to slight bleeding in some women.

I had strange spotting in different days of my cycles and I ended up having a big cyst. You should mention it to your dr. Mine went on for 4 months about 3-4 times in each cycle, and then my OB did an u/s where she found the cyst and found out I have endometriosis.

Praying it’s nothing serious.

I had this once…ended up conceiving our little angel Michael that month. Like other posters have said, work with your doctor to rule out medical stuff, but I’ve heard it’s quite common for women around ovulation and can actually mean that you are VERY fertile at that time.

There’s a difference between blood-streaked CM and actual “spotting”. And for me, it’s always been slightly blood-streaked (bright-red) or pinkish colored CM and usually only for 1 day, sometimes 2. I’m very interested to hear what others’ experiences have been.

That’s exactly it, it’s streaked, with a ribbon of blood, rather than spotting.

This is what it sounds like. When estrogen drops rapidly, it can cause a bleed. I believe it is a “withdrawal bleed” - the estrogen drops. Because it is estrogen dropping, and that happens around ovulation, there is CM present.

This is very common. Some women have it all the time. Some will never see it. And, some will only have it once or twice.

What is happening is the crossover of hormones. The estrogen drops and the progesterone rises. What you notice is the peak of fertility, followed by a change (dryness, no longer slippery). This indicates that you will ovulate within 1 day - 1 1/2 days from that peak.

If the estrogen is high and drops quickly, it can cause a bleed.

This is what I was going to say.

I get blood streaked CM occassionally the day before I ovulate. I was told it was because of a sudden drop in estrogen as your body prepares to release an egg. Along with this I get ovulation cramps (usually a dull cramping resembling period cramps).

I’d say that as long as it is just streaked in your CM, and not spotting for long periods of time or menses-like spotting, you’re probably fine. You can always talk to your GYN, which is what I did because I was a little freaked out.

I already did. She performed an endometrial biopsy just to be safe. It came back fine and she said my hormone levels were great and she wasn’t concerned. I was more just curious as to what the causes could be.
