Bloodline of Jesus

A friend of mine brought up an interesting point during Bible study. When looking at the Gospel of Luke exclusively, when you examine the geneology of Jesus, you realize that even though Joseph was from the line of David, Jesus was not related to Joseph or David because of the Immacualte Conception. How then can we argue that the Messiah is from the line of David when there is no “bloodline” connecting Jesus to David?

For starters Luke’s genealogy is thought by many to be a genealogy of Mary rather than Joseph - makes sense, the two are very different. So straight away there’s one ‘loophole’, if Mary was also descended from David.

Secondly - then as now there was such a thing as legal adoption. None of the Messianic prophecies that I’m aware of says that the Messiah will necessary be a blood relative of David, just a descendant. So an adopted descendant would still be ‘of the line’ of David - legally having all the same rights as blood descendants.

Thirdly - Jesus is God. He Himself referred to God being able to ‘raise sons for Abraham from the very stones’. If God incarnate wants to claim the prerogatives of a descendant of David who’s entitled to argue with Him?

First off, to clear up a little terminology, the Immaculate Conception has nothing to do with Jesus. It was the event of Mary being conceived without original sin.

As to the genealogy, my recollection is that tradition does indeed hold that Mary was also descended from the line of David though I don’t remember if that is specifically noted in scripture or not.

Thank you for clearing up the terminology. I do not know how I missed that, for it is a doctrine that I hold to, even though I am Protestant.

1. The relevant geneology is that of Joseph, in Matthew, demonstrating that Joseph was descneded from David. Jesus as Joseph’s adopted son was therefore also a son of David.
2. Matthew wrote that geneology to show contemporary (Jewish) scripture studies that he knew his stuff, making him a dredible source to assert that Jesus fulfilled the law & the prophets.

I’ve heard of this resource, but I’m not familiar with it. How does it reconcile the different father’s names for Joseph given in Matt and Luke?

Many seem to forget that Jesus had 2 fathers. In many cultures, adopted children are seen just as valid as a biological one. I know I cannot differentiate between my adopted child and my biological, other then I get a chuckle when someone says they look just like me.

I am taking a course (Dumb Ox) and I missed a question like this. I answered that Jesus was from the line of David through Joseph. The correct answer was that he was in David’s line because of Jospeh AND Mary.
