I recently visited another parish a long way from my home and noticed the blue candle in the sanctuary.

I was instructed in Catholic school many years ago by the Sisters on what this means, but now I can’t remember. I know it has something to do with the Blessed Mother, but I forget the details. Help?

Yeah, basically a blue candle is in honour of the Blessed Mother. If I remember rightly our Cathedral, which is named for Our Lady, has a blue sanctuary candle.

You find in many Eastern Churches the color of ALL the candles changes with the specific feasts being celebrated. I do not believe that any church document specifies the color of the tabernacle or Sanctuary lamp. I have seen Red, White(clear), Yellow and Blue.
