Blue Christmas Service

This afternoon I went by the local Lutheran church.
Their exterior sign read: Blue Christmas Service _ December 16th.

What is a Blue Christmas Service?
 
The quick google search I did said its a type of Christmas service for those in mourning or are not in a merry, happy, jolly, joyful place in their lives.

It’s a way of celebrating Christmas within the context that many are not in the “holiday spirit”
 
I attended a Blue Christmas service one year at my daughterinlaw’s church - in fact it was last year. it is not a celebration, but more a healing service for those who might be having a hard time during the holidays because of a recent loss, like a death or divorce or loss of employment. it was nice that someone cared that there are those who find it difficult to get through the holidays.
 
I don’t believe there is any formal liturgy; it depends on the church that is offering the service. In the Anglican/Episcopalian churches where I’ve attended, it is the Eucharist with a healing service incorporated into the liturgy. I have also been to a non-denominational setting where it had readings, reflections, music, and prayers for peace and healing.

I think it is a wonderful offering. Lots and lots of people present, and an opportunity for great ministry.

My mother died on Christmas, a great many years ago. It doesn’t make me blue, but I have come to a deeper appreciation of the song Blue Christmas, which I’ve been known to sing in the style of Elvis Presley as I remember Mom. We also pray for her around Christmas time.

how sad to have a loved one die on Christmas day. I love the song Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley.
