We had the first annual Blue Mass today for Firefighters, EMT’s, and Law Enforcement officers in Lewiston Maine today. It was really nice. Out in front of the Basillaca they had two ladder trucks from the fire dept. drape a huge American flag from the tower.
Of course they had all the politicians there, the Governor, and a couple of our US Congressmen were there. All firefighters, EMT’s, and law enforcement officers from accross the state were invited to show up in uniform. The Bishop presided over Mass. Mass began with the State Police color guard unit presenting the colors with bagpipes playing in the back.
The Bishops homily was great. He thanked all of us who serve the people and keep the people of the state safe and told us all that what we are doing is Godly work. He also talked of course about those who lost their lives on 9/11/01 and the recent events with Hurricane Katrina and he mentioned the chaos and looting after the hurricane.
At the end of Mass the public safety people who helped organize this presented the Bishop with a plaque and the Bishop said he was going to hang it in his office and it will remind him every day to do what he always does and pray for all of us who are keeping the people safe.
After Mass was over they had a reception in the hall which was really nice. I almost didn’t go to the Mass today because it was a little distance to drive but I can say I am glad I went and I won’t miss this annual mass again for anything.
One thing I was thinking is we finally got the Governor into a Church now if I had a chance to hand him some pro-life literature and ask him to protect the rights of all the state’s citizens including the unborn…but that probably wouldn’t have gone over too well.
