Boanerges mark 3:17

Can anyone explain to me why Jesus in Mark 3:17 gives the name Boanerges (Sons of Thunder) to James and John? Is there a tradition in the Church explaining why he did it and what the meaning is? The only other apostle he gave a new name was Peter and that was a special name after all, so why did he call them Boanerges?

God gives new names – Abram, Abraham; Sarai, Sarah; Jacob, Israel. When Jesus does this, it is another sign of his Sonship to God the Father.

I’ve heard that he called James and John Boanerges because of their temper – as in Luke 9:54 “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”
