Boasting?

Hi everyone…

So to make a long story short- I am scrupulous (joy, I know) and I’ve had a bit of a rough day. I (charitably) corrected a couple of friends on facebook over the last couple of days in regards to some intellectual errors and information that they were sharing and it’s bearing on the Catholic Church.

Today, however, I was talking with a good friend and I made a comment: “Yeah, I wouldn’t do that since I shut down so and so’s and so and so’s liberal lovefest…” Now, I recognize the sarcastic tone isn’t particularly kind, but that’s more a personality trait than anything borne out of some manner of hatred.

My main concern is whether or not I am guilty of a mortal sin of boasting. It doesn’t seem to fit Aquinas’ definition… but then I don’t know what it is… cue descent into scrupulous cycle.

I know I’ve done something wrong, but I don’t know what it is or if it’s mortal… Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you are being scrupulous and no you did not commit a mortal sin.

Please get under the REGULAR spiritual direction of a qualified priest. Posting here is NOT going to help you.

If you are wondering if the sin of boasting, being it mortal or venial in your case, you should go to confession - better safe than sorry - and speak with a priest. He’ll be able to remedy the situation with no problem.

Conveying facts is OK. In fact, not being kind is a separate issue. And there’s nothing wrong with being scrupulous.

Part one: Boasting means you are telling the world what a great and wonderful person/Catholic you are. That is not to be encouraged.

Part two: If others find out you are doing good things without you bragging about it, it is good and proper to accept praise from others. And it’s OK to feel good about that.

I know it’s hard to be kind sometimes (I’m certainly guilty of that), but charity is a virtue we must always keep in mind even if the other guy gets us riled up.
