Hi, I’m looking for a song that has in its lyrics the words “boat” and something about leaving the boat on the shore or the sand. Can’t remember more than that. thanks in advance!

Is it’

Leave your fishing nets standing on the shore
Leave your wooden boats
For the Lord is calling you to follow him
Fishers now of men
For the Lord is calling you to follow him
Fishers now of men.

Lord, I’ll go with you, standing by your side
Learning eagerly
Only let me hear you say those words again
“Come and follow me.”

If so, I’ll get the rest of the lyrics for you when I put my hands on my old hymnal.

I think the song you’re looking for might be the Galilee Song by Frank Anderson:

Deep within my heart, I feel voices whispering to me.
Words that I can’t understand; Meanings I can’t clearly hear.
Calling me to follow close, lest I leave myself behind.
Calling me to walking into evening shadows one more time.

Refrain:
So I leave my boats behind
Leave them on familiar shores
Set my heart upon the deep
Follow you again, my Lord

In my memories, I know how you send familiar rains
falling gently on my days, dancing patterns on my pain.
And I need to learn once more in the fortress of my mind,
to believe in falling rain as I travel deserts dry.
Refrain

As I gaze into the night down the future of my years,
I’m not sure I want to walk past horizons that I know.
But I feel my spirit called like a stirring deep within,
restless, ’til I live again beyond the fears that close me in.
Refrain

They actually sing this in church?

Are you sure its not…

Aye, Calypso, the places you’ve been to
The things that you’ve shown us
The stories you tell
Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you
So long and so well

😃

Nawww…it’s:

Michael, row the boat ashore
Alleluia…

:D:D

Or maybe it was this one

Hey Mister preacher man, give us da final blessing
donuttime come and me want to go home
Daay Oh, Daaaaaay Oh,
donuttime come and me want to go home.

😛

Those are great and I’m going to keep them as I will need more boat/fishing songs, but so far none of them are the song, We used to sing it in mass every sunday (like 15 years ago) and it was a lot simpler than the songs you are suggesting, easy to sing, and it was in the missal rather than the hymnal.

I need it because I’m in a tiny fishing village with a tiny church and none of their songs are about boats or even fishing, and I suddenly remembered this song–and how easy it was to learn and sing.

Do you mean Lord, You Have Come (Pescador de Hombres)?
  1. Lord, you have come to the seashore,
neither searching for the rich nor the wise,
desiring only that I should follow.
Refrain
O, Lord, with your eyes set upon me,
gently smiling, you have spoken my name;
all I longed for I have found by the water,
at your side, I will seek other shores.
  1. Lord, see my goods, my possessions;
in my boat you find no power, no wealth.
Will you accept, then, my nets and labor?
  2. Lord, take my hands and direct them.
Help me spend myself in seeking the lost,
returning love for the love you gave me.
  3. Lord, as I drift on the waters,
be the resting place of my restless heart,
my life’s companion, my friend and refuge.

Is it Follow Me? We used to sing it all the time in primary school. I don’t know where the OP is from but it maybe hasn’t crossed the Atlantic cos it comes up with annoying frequency over here!

CHORUS:
Follow me, follow me, leave your home and family,
Leave your fishing nets and boats upon the shore.
Leave the seed that you have sown, leave the crops that you have grown, leave the people you have known and follow me.
  1. The foxes have their holes,
and the swallows have their nests,
    but the son of man
has no place to lay down.
    I do not offer comfort,
    I do not offer wealth,
but in me will all happiness be found.
  2. If you would follow me,
you must leave old ways behind.
    You must take my cross
    and follow on my path.
You may be far from loved ones,
you may be far from home,
but my Father will welcome you at last.
  3. Although I go away
    you will never be alone.
    for the Spirit will be
    there to comfort you.
Though all of you may scatter,
    each follow his own path,
still the Spirit of love will lead you home.

With all due respect to the OP, this has got to be my least favorite song (Pescador de Hombres). It is sung down here (in either language) on an almost daily basis, especially during Communion. This is not appropriate for Holy Communion, as it does not speak of the mystery and grandeur of the Holy Eucharist. It’s one of those cases of severe overkill to the point that it is annoying to the point of ad naseum. It is also directed more at “me” than at “Him”.

While there are certain elements of discipleship, it’s one of those songs where the usage should be limited. I cannot tell you how many times this tired piece of music is used throughout our diocese. In fact, the Mariachi band at the Cathedral usually plays this on a regular basis, always during Communion. The local hospital chapel uses it every day during Communion, except when my parochial vicar celebrates Mass. He has stopped the singing of the processional and Communion songs, opting, instead, to use the entrance and Communion antiphons. What we sing, when he celebrates Mass both there and at our parish, are the parts of the Mass that should be sung (Gospel Acclamation, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamaton and the Great Amen).

When I have had to plan Masses, I hardly ever use this song, and, when I do, I use it either as the processional or at the offertory, but, never during Communion.

We sang that at mass about five years ago! I thought I had traveled back in time to the 1960s. :o

How about [The Sloop John B?{/url]](
)

What is worse is that some of the Spanish-language song books have set the translation of the venerable “Jesus Christ is Ris’n Today” to the tune of Michael Rowed His Boat Ashore. It sounds ghastly.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but I’ve been looking for more information on the internet regarding this song (title, sheet music, which hymnal?). These are the lyrics as posted previously:

Thanks!

Hi,
That hymn was a staple at the military parish I attended back in the late 80s.

Leave Your Fishing Nets

The melody simply says “Jewish Melody” . Looking up his lyrics I see that he is fond of setting them to Jewish, Russian and Israeli folk melodies.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was able to find more info. The original tune is a Yiddish lullaby ‘Oyfn Pripetchik’ by Mark Warshawsky (1848-1907).
