A vehicle I pass on the road occasionally has a bumper sticker talking about how many folks were killed when we mixed politics and religion. It is of course an attack on the Church.

What are the best estimates, high ones even, of the total deaths during the crusades etc. ?

The point in my asking is just for personal knowledge primarily. But also because I have to observe that the last time we did away with religion we killed at least 100 million via the militant athiests ( aka communists ) in a 100 year period.

Clearly those who attack the Church on this betray their bias for not attacking the lack of religion more than religion itself.

if the body count exeded 1 million I would be shocked and amazed. only 2 of The crusades were started by the church the rest were started by kings. Remember the knights who fought in the crusades were monks who just happened to carry swords, they took vows other religous did. It was a social experiment conducted by the church to stop the exesive violence in war. The commie’s and nazis and secular rulers have murdered way more people then any religous group. War is started by politans over land money and power and in the past used religion to round up support so they could get more land money and power. it is secular rulers who start wars which is why we need to keep politans out of politics they just end up murdering people.

I have to agree, far more loss has happened due to a lack of God rather than due to faith. These folks betray their lack of understanding of history.

Or maybe it’s an attack on Muslim extremists.

“The Church” is not the only religion, you know. And certainly not the only one that meddled in politics in such a way that folks ended up dead.

I wouldn’t let yourself be bothered by random attacking bumper stickers. besides, its clear that the bulk of all wars are about gaining power or material wealth or both. Even those masquerading as religious wars were generally power or money grabs.

Thanks for the comments.
just a quick aside,
“The Black Book of Communism” documents the Slaughter of innocents under a completely secular ( totally anti-Religious) Movement in the 20th century by some of the same folks that were members of that movement. Those numbers dwarf any of the “religious” Comparisons.

Yours in Christ
