I apologise if that turn of phrase “shadows of our former selves” misdirected you. I’m not using is in a greco-roman way simply as a turn of phrase to indicate that the soul, while the most important part, is not the only part of me.

Regarding unity, lets go back to the difference between living and dead. If i promised to sell you a horse and I sold you a dead horse, you wouldn’t say oh thank you you would complain. We understand intuitively the difference between a horse and the corpse of a horse! Something happens to stop you calling it properly speaking a horse.

The same is true in the unity of body and soul. If I loose my limbs, I am still recognisable as a living entity and as such as me, if i loose my body through death, properly speaking if you don’t see me but my corpse. You would not treat my corpse the same way as you would treat the living me. In addition while still alive if you were to punch me in the shoulder for example, you punch me you don’t simply damage my property. This for me underlines the unity of body and soul I spoke of previously. This is not simply an english language thing although this was the example i used first as I was not sure of your first language.

Cell replacement does not affect such a unity as just as loosing a limb does not affect who I am as a unity neither. The soul as form of the matter of my body is unchanging spite what happens to the matter itself up to the point the body is no longer in the form of my body, of me, where in the unity is sundered. That it why i say the soulis the most important bit.
Theophorus, this is becoming too complex. Moreover, my former post did not come with 2 pictures.

Let’s reset. Would you mind to believe that when you die you will be you in the hands of God? That you will be like the angels in heaven? That if you go before me, I can pray to you, talk to you? That you will have the speed of light and more, the knowledge of the whole world, the beauty of the whole Universe and more, the heppiness that all can be contained inside you and that you will be within the Holy Trinity and the Holy Trinity inside you forever and ever and that one day you will reunite with your body which will be trasformed into a Body Glorious as the Body of Jesus Crhist in Tabor and after ressurrection?
Please do !

Fair enough Pfaffenhoffen, I thank you for this discussion it has been an absolute pleasure debating with you. God willing we will get to heaven, and there we will be gazing on the beatific vision which will strip us of all the limitations of this lifeby the gace of God, where we be able to do all that you suggest and more(though I think in that case we will be greater than even the angels!) So until then, in the words of St. Thomas More - “Pray for me, as I will for thee, that we may merrily meet in heaven.”

they are the same thing in the sense that they make up human beings, they just describe different parts of our existence. Our body is simple material, that which individuates, gives matter to the form. Our Soul is our form, aka human being, why you are able to say you are a human, that is joe bob.

I would disagree with you.
After death you go on saying “I” and “me”, the same “me” and “I” that was before death. After all, you go on saying “I” and “me” if you lose the 2 legs and the 2 arms and, as a consequence, the whole body.
do you call the arms and legs you lost I or Me. If I were to cut my hand off would I call my hand look I just cut me, or would you say I cut my hand. Your hand would go under a substantial change and is no longer a hand, it is no longer part of you.
Body may change from the egg to being overweight but it is still the same “me”.
this is an accidental change, the form doesn’t change
It may die and I am still I.
this is substantial change and this really isn’t true. The Body in the casket is just a body it no longer has a soul. It still has form but it has a different form than it was before death .
And the body will ressurrect and I will be I.
yes because the Body and Soul are reconnected, well I believe we will be given new material to fit our Soul
I guess there could be a soul without a body. No problem.
sure but we can never have a body without a soul and it be considered a human.
The only problem is that God did not want to.
For that, it is enough to have the angels…
angels are a different issue.
