I’m sorry I missed this one.

"It was clear from the moment the priest danced down the aisle, clapping and side-stepping to the beat, that this was to be no ordinary Catholic service. The Rev. Maurice J. Nutt was dancing, pacing, hollering or praying - “Hallelujah! Thank the Holy Spirit!” - for the duration of a two-hour revival at Christ the King Church, 2777 E. Livingston Ave. on the East Side. The event was sponsored by the Black Catholic Ministries of the Diocese of Columbus.

Nutt combined Scriptural teaching with down-to-earth language - “don’t get it twisted” - and implored the 180 or so in the pews to use the gifts God has already given them, rather than wanting more. “I dare you to slap somebody and say, ‘Use what you already have!’” he shouted, playfully flicking a towel at three worshippers, a towel he would later use to wipe his brow as he sped around the church."

“Black Catholics tend to worship differently than other Catholics, said Darren Davis, a political-science professor at the University of Notre Dame. Masses tend to include gospel music and expressive worship, similar to services of the Southern Baptist tradition.”

St. Augustine’s, here in North Little Rock, is a primarily black church, and it is much like that - far more expressive during Mass than the predominantly white parishes.
 
It seems this was not done during Mass, so it’s not so bad- it would be better had it been done outside of the church building. This isn’t just a cultural thing- Cardinal Arinze is as black as can be and he doesn’t act like that during Mass.
 
Fr. Nutt was in the St Louis Archdiocese - he’s is phenomenol. 👍 He was at St Alphonsus (called ROCK church) – very engaging. He got the message out, spread the Word.

Glad to see he’s doing what he was meant to do. Be a priest.

Ah…the Southern Baptist rite. 😉

There is a lot of latitude in the rubrics of the Church. There is only a problem if rubrics are not being followed.

This wasn’t at Mass. It was at a three-day evening Revival meeting.
 
I attended a youth mass at a protestant denomination. We were hoopin and a hollering, singing songs about King David, clapping and dancing.

And, clapping and dancing, and clapping and dancing.

And I was praying and praying that the darn song would end so we all could just sit down.

The same goes on at a Sunday evening youth Mass in one of the parishes in Little Rock - drums and keyboard and guitars and piano and rocking and hands in the air and gesticulating (“My God is an awesome God” takes the cake for that) clapping! and even dancing! 🙂 🙂
 
I wonder if Cardinal Arinze would make an exception to his proscription against dance at Mass for black churches in the U.S. Either way, he did say that any dance at Mass (in Africa) should still be respectful. Or, as he puts it, no ‘Saturday evening dance’.

Totally different situation, if it wasn’t a Mass. Non-Mass celebrations don’t have rubrics…as long as teaching and actions are in line with the Church, then people can celebrate in any way the Spirit moves them. 👍
 
There have been worse things going on in the Catholic world than this service.

Just as long as there is about a 5:1 ratio of EF Masses to these services, we should be fine.
