Hi,

I have a 12 year old son who I would like to see read more. My daughters have always loved reading and I have an easy time finding things that interest them. My 16 year old son, quite the geek, reads mostly non-fiction, but he reads.

Any suggestions for the 12 year old?

Thanks

I teach middle school English and consequently read a lot of young adult books. What is your son interested in? What is his reading level?

Hi! I am an avid reader, and my daughter and I read all the time. If he’s into adventure, these are a few of my favorites:
Red Dog by Bill Wallace
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

also, Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn
Where the Red Fern Grows
Island of the Blue Dolphins

Enders Game series by Orson Scott Card (about a boy in his age range and excellently written)

Swiss Family Robinson

What’s his reading level? I have always been an avid reader and have tons of great books stored up 😃

Louis Sachar books are good…Judy Blume is also good…I will never forget reading One Fat Summer, when I was going into 6th grade. It was great! I also like the classics…Huck Finn, etc…but, my daughter who is 11, reads the Chronicles of Narnia series too…try those above authors…they are very quick reads, but enjoyable. I also started scheduling a read time in the afternoon for my kids. We just moved…I’m working, and my husband is looking for work–but he is home a lot with them, and so he makes sure it gets done. 😃

His reading level was a 7.8 when he was tested in sixth grade. I asked him what he likes and he said, funny suspenseful books. He will be going into 7th grade.

Thanks!

I wish he enjoyed fantasy, like the other kids, but he was adimate when asked to read A Wrinkle in Time, I DON’T LIKE FANTASY!!!🤷

Gary Paulsen
Hatchet
Brian’s Winter
Brian’s Return

High adventure of a teen age boy making it on his own in the northern wilderness.

My 12 year old (who hates to read) really like these books.

When I was that age I loved reading the Frank Peretti books for teens. They are somewhat historical based, so he may like them since they’re not fantasy. There is a whole series about a family who go on different archaeological digs and get into all kinds of things. They also teach good Christian morals. They’re not Catholic, but most of them have something to do with Biblical history. 🙂
