Is it acceptable for a Catholic to use the “Book of Common Prayer” in use by the Anglicans?

It wouldn’t bother me; I’d suggest the 1928 Episcopal Book.

But it might be better if you tried a copy of the Book of Divine Worship, used in the Anglican Use parishes.

I’m just asking because I was raised in the Episcopal Church. I’m just coming to Catholicism because I don’t like how liberal the Episcopalian Church has gotten. At times however I find myself nostalgic for some of the old liturgy and prayers.

As I say, try the Book of Divine Worship. It follows the 1979 book, so, not so good. But if you were used to that, it will look familiar.

Since I’m Anglican myself, I wouldn’t mind if you used one of the Episcopal Books. I’ve heard cradle RCs say they have, for prayer/devotion. But the Book of Divine Worship is officially a RC Book. Might be better.

Ahh, the good ol’ BCP! I don’t think there’s anything in Morning or Evening Prayer that would be problematic for personal devotion (obviously open to correction if I’m wrong!). GKC’s suggestion is probably a good one too.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Seriously, no. Throw the Book of Common Prayer in the trash where it belongs.

I don’t think there would be anything wrong with any prayer book that isn’t explicitly heretical. The Anglicans were operating off of original Catholic theology so they’re probably OK.

I know I should probably transition to the Book of Divine Worship. But I don’t like some of the changes 😦

I am Eastern Orthodox, but I use the BCP for morning and evening prayer. The Orthodox hours are so complex, and require such a library (a book a month plus the Lenten Triodion and the Pentcostarian) that I have neither the space or the funds to buy them.

But I still use the Jordanville prayer book as well.
