Book on Byzantine Catholicism?

Last weekend I went to the Divine Liturgy at St. George Romanian Catholic Cathedral (the Romanian Catholic Cathedral for the whole U.S.), and it was WONDERFUL! I cannot get the constant chanting, gestures, incense, and beautifully revent expressions of prayer out of my head! All Masses are a little slice of heaven, but the Divine Liturgy SEEMED like heaven itself!

What book would you recommend for a Roman Catholic like myself to gain a really solid and fruitful understanding of Byzatine Rite Catholicism? While I would appreciate any feedback anyone could offer, it would probably be most helpful to have any advice from someone who has a really solid understand of the Latin Rite (and perhaps was even of that Rite at one time).

As a Ukrainian Catholic, Byzantine Rite that married a Latin Rite fellow 33 years ago and attend both rites, I may be able to help. I’ve observed many similarities in the Divine Liturgy and the Mass and knowing both enriches my participation in the celebration, whichever I attend. What may be helpful is to attend Byzantine service celebrated in English, really listen to understand the structure of the Divine Liturgy and then compare it to the Mass. I find both Celebrations to be uplifting and Eucharist centered, but in different ways. It’s the best of both worlds!

Now you understand why St. Vladimir’s envoys said almost exactly the same thing after experiencing the Church of the Holy Wisdom.

If this is the weekend of 6-7 October, we were at the Monastery of the Holy Resurrection (hrmonline.org), which is part of the Romanian Catholic Eparchy. The incense for Matins could be smelled outside the gate in the parking lot! It was our privilege while there to meet with Bishop John Michael Botean, a singularly holy and humble man. May God preserve him for the Chuch for many years!

See if you can find a book called A GUIDE TO THE DOMESTIC CHURCH.

If I’m not mistaken, it was published by the Melkite church but it is a good beginner’s guide to Eastern Catholic church and explains many things about Eastern traditions…

One inexpensive source to look for the teachings is to read the troparia, kontakia, prokimenia, irmosi, and dogmatikoni in for the various texts.

The Ruthenian pewbook (downloadable form the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Church’s Metropolitan Cantor Institute (see my sig) as a PDF for free, or from byzantines.net/byzantinepress/ (The metropolia’s Byzantine Seminary Press) for a nominal fee.

These are good suggestions. Reading and studying andpraying the Divine Liturgy is probably one of the best helps.

Interestingly enough, when I was a catechumen, converting from Judaism to Byzantine Catholicism, with the exception of the Ruthenian pewbook, all the sources that were suggested to me and which I used, were Orthodox.
